Amazon.com Review
Open Mike Friday is everyone's favorite day in Mr. Ward's English class. On Fridays, his 18 high-school students dare to relax long enough to let slip the poets, painters, readers, and dreamers that exist within each of them. Raul Ramirez, the self-described "next Diego Rivera," longs "to show the beauty of our people, that we are not all banditos like they show on TV, munching cuchfritos and sipping beer through chipped teeth." And while angry Tyrone Bittings finds dubious comfort in denying hope: "Life is cold. Future?...wish there was some future to talk about. I could use me some future," overweight Janelle Battle hopes to be seen for what she really is: "for I am coconut / and the heart of me / is sweeter / than you know" They are all here: the tall girl, the tough-talking rapper, the jock, the beauty queen, the teenage mom, the artist, and many more. While it may sound like another Breakfast Club rehash, Grimes uses both poetry and revealing first-person prose to give each character a distinct voice. By book's end, all the voices have blended seamlessly into a multicultural chorus laden with a message that is probably summed up best by pretty girl Tanisha Scott's comment, "I am not a skin color or a hank of wavy hair. I am a person, and if they don't get that, it's their problem, not mine." But no teen reader will have a problem with this lyrical mix of many-hued views. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

From Publishers Weekly
When a high school teacher in the Bronx begins to host open-mike poetry in his classroom on Fridays, his students find a forum to express their identity issues and forge unexpected connections with one another. Grimes's (Jazmin's Notebook) creative, contemporary premise will hook teens, and the poems may even inspire readers to try a few of their own. The poetic forms range from lyrics penned by aspiring rapper Tyrone to the concrete poem of a budding Puerto Rican painter Raul (titled "Zorro" and formed as the letter "Z"). Ultimately, though, there may be too many characters for the audience to penetrate deeply. The students in Mr. Ward's English class experience everything from dyslexia and low self-esteem to teenage motherhood and physical abuse. The narrators trade off quickly, offering only a glimpse into their lives. Not even Tyrone, who breaks in after each student's poem to offer some commentary, comes fully to life. The students' poems, however, provide some lasting images (e.g., overweight Janelle, who is teased for her "thick casing," writes, "I am coconut,/ and the heart of me/ is sweeter/ than you know"). Any one of these students could likely dominate a novel of his or her own, they simply get too little time to hold the floor here. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up-A flowing, rhythmic portrait of the diversity and individuality of teen characters in a classroom in Anywhere, U.S.A. Each teen's story is told by combining his or her poetry with snippets of narration. Readers meet Tyrone, an aspiring songwriter who sees no use for school; Lupe, who thinks that becoming a mother would give her the love she lacks in her life; and Janelle, who is struggling with her body image. As their stories unfold and intertwine with those of their classmates, readers are able to observe changes in them and watch the group evolve into a more cohesive unit. Grimes's style is reminiscent of Mel Glenn's poetry novels, but by telling these stories in both poetry and narration, the author adds a new twist. Competent and reluctant readers alike will recognize and empathize with these teens. As always, Grimes gives young people exactly what they're looking for-real characters who show them they are not alone.

Review

“If it's hard to talk about Rosalie Lightning without sounding hyperbolic, it's only because its achievement is so breathtaking: it is the bravest act of writing and bearing witness I expect to see in my lifetime. There aren't words of praise sufficient to this brave, unblinking task. It will comfort the grieving for generations to come; I am profoundly grateful for this book.” – John Darnielle, author of Wolf in White Van

“Tom Hart's Rosalie Lightning is honest, searching, burning, and beautiful. Every parent will find a piece of themselves in this unforgettable graphic memoir.” ―Scott McCloud, author of THE SCULPTOR

“I don't know how Tom Hart was able to make such a stunning, harrowing book out of his devastation and rage; it strikes me as most gracious and humane thing anyone could possibly do. Reading Rosalie Lightning is like standing at the edge of an abyss and watching someone construct a gleaming titanium bridge by sheer, overwhelming force of love.” ―Lauren Groff, New York Times Bestselling author

“Only a cartoonist of tremendous skill and a father with loads of guts could piece through his heartbreak and come out with such a piece of art. I can't read it without crying.” ―Austin Kleon, author of Steal Like An Artist

“Tom Hart's black-and-white "RL,"... recounts the loss of his 2-year-old daughter Rosalie by building a hill of fragile, elegantly drawn memories around it. It's a bleak and devastating work that shows comics' ability to convey emotion as effectively as any short fiction or literature.” ―Denver Post

"This memoir about the death of his young daughter, is EVERYTHING I WANT IN A GRAPHIC MEMOIR. The writing is excellent. The drawing is raw, efficient, direct. It is honest, truthful, heartbreaking. There's no manipulation, just the facts and the emotions felt. I can't say enough good things about it. I think it's one of the best, not just graphic novels, but books, period, that I have read in a long, long time. People who know me know that I only like about 1/10th of 1% of the graphic novels I see...." ―Mimi Pond, author of Over Easy

"AMAZING, MOVING, BRILLIANT ... I am truly blown away... Honestly, it has been a very long time since a piece of art slayed me. Thank you." - Jill Ciment, author of Heroic Measures

A child's death; a celebration of life
By Unity Dienes
Reading this intensely personal graphic novel is unsettling. The pain radiates off the pages, and I came to wonder why I was reading it. Schadenfreude? No, because I derived no pleasure from their despair. In part, perhaps, to tap into a pure depth of human grief, to try to understand a little what such an enormous loss would feel like. Like poetry that conveys an experience in and through the language, this graphic novel conveys with laconic text and expressive art the pain that is every parent's nightmare.

Certainly the book might give expression to the feelings and help create a sense of community for the (thankfully) small group of parents who have lost a child. Perhaps for those trying to make sense or even just cope with such a loss, this book is powerfully important. But I think it could be good for other grievers, too. Although different, the loss of anyone we love can feel cataclysmic, and I think the kind of deep hole and sense of drifting the author describes can also be the experience of anyone grieving. I felt echoes of those feelings when I was hit with the loss of 3 beloved relatives in a short time period. Maybe it wasn't the same kind of outrage and despair as that felt by someone who lost a child, but it still hit me hard. This book gave voice to some of that, and I found resonating harmonics in the pages.

But ultimately I value this book because it is a celebration of life. Why did the author want to publish this book? Not for money, surely. I am sure it is as an homage to the love and life of his little girl. At one point one of them says that in spite of the pain, and even if they had known it would end that way, they still would have wanted to experience her joy and life for the brief (almost) 2 years she was with them. That's really what it's all about, right? I never knew little Rosalie, but this book is the best kind of memorial, the best kind of celebration of her life and impact on those around her. May her memory be eternal!

As for me, I'm going to hug my children and try to remember to appreciate every day, even the hard ones, even when my teenager gives me attitude or the little ones can't stop quarreling. Because life is worth living and we only get what we get and we don't know when the rug might be pulled out from under us.

My deepest condolences to the family of little Rosalie Lightning.

Beautiful Memoir Left Me Breathless
By Satia Renee
I can’t remember the last time I was affected by a book as deeply as I was by Rosalie Lightning by Tom Hart. I have read memoirs by parents who have survived the loss of a child. Some have been more profoundly impressive than others, have left me emotionally exhausted, but this is the first one I had to close repeatedly because I had tears in my eyes and could not read further. Or I simply wanted to breathe in silence for a few moments before reading some more.

Yes, this graphic memoir is simply that good. The images are rough and deceptively simple, not unlike grief itself. There are allusions to classic comics, lyrics, and more. None of these are gratuitous. But there are visual allusions also used and they are so powerfully effective. Nothing on the page is there without reason. And every image, every word, every part of this memoir is breathtaking, bringing tears to my eyes, making me feel so much. There are emotional experiences Hart has that are similar to those other grieving parents have expressed but at no point does this seem trite or cliché. There is so much honesty poured into this graphic memoir, I can’t recommend it strongly enough. It is not an easy book to read. But it is beautiful.

Where did the Big Moon go?
By Ladybug
I don't usually read graphic novels, but the description of Rosalie Lightning caught my attention, so here I am. I can't believe how powerful this book is. It is stunning. Heartbreaking. The text is incredible on its own, but coupled with the pictures...I mean, there are no words to describe it. Reading this book is pure feeling. All you do is experience the author's pain along with him.

Some of my favorite parts:

The part where he talks to a happy pregnant woman right after his baby dies, and he describes himself, draws himself, as shattered obsidian.

The part where he draws "Images You'll Get Used to While Grieving Your Lost Child: crackers, fruits, and meats in little gift boxes; oranges peeled, never eaten; your spouse on the ground; you on the ground." The part where he describes his past (a sketch of his baby playing in the grass), his present (a sketch of him wide- and bleary-eyed on the ground), his future (a solid square of blackness).

The many parts where he shows what his child was like (pointing at the moon: Where did the Big Moon go, Daddy?), and what she could have been, but will never be.

In other words, I cried. A lot.

There is light at the end of this book--or maybe I should say growth. I love the last story Hart shares. In fact, I was surprised by the solidly--almost defiantly--hopeful ending. (Maybe Hart was, too?)

My heart goes out to him and his wife. I hope they find peace (and at least a little bit of joy) after such a horrible tragedy.

Tremendous White repertoire, volume 2
By Derek Grimmell
This is the second volume of Avrukh's White opening repertoire with 1. d4, and covers all cases where Black does not answer 1. ...d5. These lines are covered in the first volume, 1.d4 (Grandmaster Repertoire) (v. 1). He focuses on systems that include a Kingside fianchetto, as he believes in denying Black the fun of a Kingside attack as much as possible. So this is a repertoire for the more aggressive player.

Because of this emphasis, he avoids a few extremely tactical lines in which both sides essentially spin the wheel, such as Benoni variations in which White plays an early f4. Against the Grunfeld he recommends two lines, both with a Kingside fianchetto: 5. cxd5 Nxd5 6. Nf3, which gets about 30 pages of coverage, and 5. b3, with Black being the one to capture on c4. Against the Benko gambit he looks at a number of minor but tricky lines for Black before settling in to the main lines with ...Ba6 and ...Nbd7, which he analyzes out to variation B322323. As with the other books in this series, Avrukh's analysis is a healthy compromise between the "tree" format (which nowadays, with the state of theory, more resembles a bush or a thicket) and the "game" format. He has clear main lines in bold face, with an index at the start of each of the 38 chapters, and each main line has one or at most two offshoots at each branching point. Ideas are presented more in the form of moves than in text, although there is some verbal explanation of ideas, but this remains a book for advanced tournament players and international players, rather than beginners, intermediate, or club players.

One of the highlights of this book is that it complements not only Avrukh's volume 1, but also Marin's first volume on the English, Grandmaster Repertoire 3 - The English Opening vol. 1. If you play the English and have appreciated Marin's book as much as I have, you will find that the repertoire choice for the King's Indian in this book blends in very nicely. Between the two of them, they are constructing a marvelously rich opening repertoire in the Closed and Flank openings.

Avrukh gives a lot of information about move-order subtleties. For example, after 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. g3 Bg7 4. Bg2 d6 5. Nc3 0-0 6. Nf3 Nc6 7. 0-0, he illustrates the difference it makes whether Black first plays ...a6 or ...Rb8. He describes how he intended to play 8. h3 against both, but against 7. ...a6 8. h3 Black plays 8. ...Bd7 and gets a good game. Thus, he recommends 7. ...a6 8. Qd3, which he backs up with extensive analysis, but against 7. Rb8 he goes with 8. h3 followed by g4. Wherever he made such repertiore decisions, Avrukh scrupulously describes the reasons why he made the decisions he made, usually with variations to illustrate the point. He rarely just states a conclusion without some kind of support.

Overall, an indispensable book for anyone following either Avrukh's or Marin's repertoires.

very ambitious work; make sure you're up to the challenge!
By Amazon Customer
Avrukh's two-volume repertoire series will surely be remembered as some of the best chess opening literature in history. But at 600+ pages of dense analysis for the second volume alone, this work is probably more ambitious most chess players are prepared to handle, myself included (and I'm USCF 1950).

Just a helpful hint if that sounds like you: I'd recommend starting with a more digestible repertoire based around the Catalan and kingside fianchetto variations first. For example, the "Wojo's Weapons" series is high quality and highly accessible. I think it's important to first develop a complete repertoire, then supplement it with chapters from Avrukh's magnum opus as needed. Over time you might supplement the entire repertoire. The point is that I can imagine someone trying to tackle this monster and never quite feeling truly prepared sitting at the board because you're still learning the main lines. Just my two cents.

Best of luck if you decide you're up to the challenge!

Excellent wealth of information but difficult to absorb
By Yuri Wijting
First off this is a well organized, analyzed, and clearly explained guide that compliments 1.D4 volume one. I have both books. However, I have mixed feelings about both of them. Unless you have lots and lots of time and a training partner, it is virtually impossible to absorb all the information that Boris Avrukh puts forward. From my experience the gap between theory and practice is much greater below master strength while from master to grandmaster the gap gets considerably narrower. If most of your opponents are below master-grandmaster strength then this book (both volumes) would not serve you that well.

So from a theoretical perspective this book (including volume 1) is stellar but how to convert theoretical knowledge into practical success is not so easy. Here is where the book will not help in that it doesn't show you how to convert a theoretical plus into a win but Avrukh assumes that you have the skill to do that. Ideally, if one could learn how to properly handle middle-game structures then books such as Avrukh's would be the logical next step. However, most chess players have the cart before the horse in that they learn theoretical lines first before knowing how to convert superior positions into winning positions. If it were me, I would have focused on the middle-game positions for those openings discussed by Avrukh and then after having a really good feel for them then go into theoretical lines.

So what's the alternative. Well, from the first players' (white) perspective you could adopt a reversed Grunfeld against everything as suggested by Bent Larsen's "Zoom 001" which involves pattern recognition rather than theoretical memorization. A review of that book is another discussion.

In short, I wish that Avrukh has demonstrated more pattern recognition for the openings he discusses. If you're willing to put in a lot of hours and work with a training partner then Avrukh's books will pay huge dividends, but you would be better off first learning the middle-game scenarios of those openings you wish to explore and then return to Avruhk's discussion of those lines.

Excellent text
By Leonid V. Shoshin
This book is an excellent resource for those who wish to stay ahead of the curve on academic information. Biotech and nanobiotech papers are frequently unpublished in English for a while after Japanese publication, and this book (along with supplementary books of the same series) gives you the tools and directions necessary to grasp desired information within several weeks of learning. I also appreciated the list of recommended additional literature for learning Japanese and technical translation that this book provides in the early chapters.

This is a marvelous book: in a few weeks you will be able of reading and writing phrases like: "zinc and chlorhidric acid mix to produce hydrogen and heat". Very clear, well constructed with a lot of examples and exercises. It does not need a dictionary or else it is totally self contained.

Review
"It is terrific....very valuable for engineers.....well thought out and right on the money." - Neil Senturia, Blackbird Ventures

"What a nice surprise to receive it. I've told several people about the book. It's such a great topic, one which you know I especially appreciate. - Susan de la Vergne, www.susandelavergne.com

"Throughout my career, I’ve always said that I’ve been helped a lot by things that I didn’t learn in engineering school. This is especially true of the Dartmouth curriculum for engineers, which requires 5 years, and has a strong liberal arts component. So I planned my speech around the theme of how important it is to be able to do more than technical things. At the same time, I saw your book mentioned in the ASCE newspaper, so I thought that it would make a nice gift to the 150 engineering graduates. I purchased the book through Barnes and Noble (internet, of course). It is a good, useful publication about something that I believe very strongly. I was happy to see that someone has written a book about something that should be a fundamental precept for success in the world of engineering, and I was happy to share it with some young people who will shape the world for the next 40 years." - Tom O'Neill, CEO Parsons Brinckerhoff

"I think that part of what we do as educators, in addition to developing knowledge, skills, and experiences in the curricula, is to equip the students with other useful survival skills. Carl's experiences as reflected in his book are an example of these skills. While the book is written from an engineering perspective, its contents apply across the disciplines. I was so taken by its relevance to the needs of students that I recommended it to the Graduate Honors Program at Baruch. The danger in the book is that may be perceived as relevant only to engineering. This is definitely not the case. It ought, I believe, be done on across all departments and all classes. Perhaps it is my long experience in the business world that accounts for enthusiasm for what Carl has done and can do. My survival kit looks much like Carl's." - James Drogan, Acting Director, Graduate Program in International Transportation Management, SUNY Maritime College

"It was like having my own personal mentor at the tip of my fingers." - Kimberly Gilbert, Track Engineering Manager, SYSTRA Consulting

"I found your book to be perfectly appropriate for this [first job] stage of my life. What a great toolbox for me to start my career with. The examples and tips you give are truly helpful and I plan on keeping it available for referencing at each and every profession that I explore in the future." - Laynie Weaver, National Transit Institute, Rutgers University

"I enjoyed your book and will recommend it highly to everyone I know. You are great encouragement to those in the engineering field." - Darlene Rivera, P.E., Project Manager, Berger Lehman Associates, P.C.

"Those of you who've been following Carl Selinger's monthly "Stuff You Don't Learn in Engineering School" column on the IEEE Spectrum Careers site will be pleased to learn of his book by the same title. The book covers non-technical "real world" leadership skills like decision-making, setting priorities, negotiating, teamwork, running meetings, and better writing and speaking. We're big fans of Carl's friendly, level-headed approaching to tackling these often confusing topics." - IEEE Canada Newsletter

"The book was very readable and filled with insights. I was particularly fond of the chapters on assertiveness and leadership. The book has an excellent combination of helpful business and social tips, reasons to learn them, and methods to gain these traits for yourself. The book is a powerful tool for newly minted engineers and experienced professional engineers." - Dominick Gatto, P.E.

"Selinger offers a condensed, easy to read synopsis of important skills engineers need to know to succeed in business, such as how to conduct meetings, time management, and decision making. The ideas are given in practical, easy to follow, guidelines, with examples. Good sourcebook for career development." - Mary Gennuso, Computer Specialist, NYC Transit

"Carl Selinger is on target for his efforts and employers owe him a debt as well. Managers benefit because they get a window on what Carl discusses with students when they attend his seminars. As we go through many of the current management fads, folks like Carl seem to understand that it is the "software" (i.e., the people) that make the difference. People skills are extremely important if you expect to survive. Every good project manager I have ever worked with or sharp youngster I have had the privilege of developing "gets it" at this basic level. The organization of the book touches on topics that most engineering schools cannot teach. For those of you with lower grades in engineering school than you would have liked, or those of you who know a recent engineering grad or a soon to be engineering grad, this is the book for you." - Steven Marrano, ATCO

Nice superficial review of management skills needed
By JimWorm
This is a nice, superficial review of many varied topics that they don't usually teach you in Engineering School (or any other science discipline). While there are a lot of important points made, there is little depth to the topics covered. There are a lot of personal anecdotes, and little grey boxes that rephrases what is already in the text. The author does seem to have a lot of experience beyond engineering where he has acquired skills, but there is little detail on how to do it for your self. It leaves you looking for more. There are list of "suggested readings" at the end of each chapter, but no bibliography or foot notes to indicate the specific reference from which he obtained that particular information. It makes for interesting reading, and does expose the reader to a lot of new topics and skill that one needs to acquire, but thin on how to do it. Still, a worthwhile book to read, especially if you are fresh out of college, and don't know how to interact in the corporate world.

This is basically a "Management Primer", and performs that function well. Would recommend it for a read, but this is not be a "reference" book to be kept in your library.

Great book for Engineers
By Brandon
This is a great book for engineers in their senior/4th year of school or engineers who are entering the work force. But, if you've long passed those stages in your life, then its still a beneficial book to read too. He does a good job at explaining how to be better at the so called "soft skills" where our training as engineers is (typically) lacking. He claims that, although schools are great at teaching the science, math, and all around technical side of engineering, they are usually poor at teaching these soft skills (writing, presenting, etc.) There are great tips in the book on how to be more effective at meetings, how to be better at managing your time, relieving stress, etc. Whats great is the chapters are (mostly) unrelated so you can read them in any order that you choose... In fact, he recommends it. I have personally used some of his tips on "being more effective at meetings" and can say that they have helped me be a better at my job. Lastly, he doesn't orient the book toward a specific type of engineering, but to all engineers in general. I would recommend this book to any graduating engineers who are going into the "real world".

Great Skill Building Book for Engineers!
By Anthony Fasano
Being someone who works with engineers on a daily basis on their "soft" skills I truly appreciate what Carl has done through this book. He has taken the skills that engineers often struggle with and he has given simple steps to learn them. He defines them, makes it very clear that they can be learned and then gives ways, examples and activities for doing so. I love how the activities forward the action and get you think beyond just reading on the page!

In my opinion, all of the skills discussed are critical to a successful career for engineers, however one that I really enjoyed reading about was decision-making. This is one that I feel is very underrated and not talked about much, yet we do it multiple times each day. Carl breaks down this skill and gives an excellent 4 step process for making decisions. I have already started using this process!

I highly recommend this book to anyone from college seniors studying engineering to engineering managers. These skills apply to every engineer both in your career and life!
