About the Author
Yoshiki Tanaka was born in 1952 in Kumamoto Prefecture and completed a doctorate in literature at Gakushuin University. Tanaka won the Gen’eijo (a mystery magazine) New Writer Award with his debut story “Midori no Sogen ni…” (On the Green Field…) in 1978 and then started his career as a science fiction and fantasy writer. Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Dawn, which translates the European wars of the nineteenth century to an interstellar setting, won the Seiun Award for best science fiction novel in 1987. Tanaka’s other works include the fantasy series The Heroic Legend of Arslan and many other science fiction, fantasy, historical, and mystery novels and stories.

Miscellaneous Showy Flowers BUNCHBERRY Leaves, roots, berries Cornus canadensis L. Dogwood Family

Low-growing, spreading perennial, 3–8 in., often forming large colonies. Oval leaves in whorls of 6 beneath showy “flowers” (bracts); veins arch from leaf base toward tip; margins entire. Small, greenish white flowers tightly clustered above 4 large, white, petallike bracts; May–July. Fruit scarlet, single-seeded. Where found: Moist, cool forests, meadows, bogs. Alaska to Idaho, Mont. south to N.M., nw. Calif. eastern N. America. Uses: American Indians toasted the leaves, then sprinkled the powder on sores. Berries were a snack source, dried and stored for winter; also chewed to treat insanity. Leaf tea drunk as a strong laxative and to treat paralysis. The Paiutes mashed and strained the roots and used the liquid as a wash for sore eyes. Tea of the whole plant was taken for coughs, fevers, and tuberculosis. Tea from roots, leaves, and berries was drunk for fits. A root tea was given to babies for colic. Bark tea drunk for body pains.

Multibranched, bumpy-stemmed perennial, spreading along ground; to 24 in. high. Leaves succulent, alternate, flat, ovate to spoon-shaped; margins wavy. Flowers stalkless in leaf axils, showy, white to red- tinged, with many stamens and 5 linear petals; Mar.–Oct. Bumpy fruit opening when moist. Where found: Saline soils near coast, bluffs, disturbed sites, coastal sage scrub. Along the cen. and s. coast of Calif. to Ariz.; Baja Calif., Mexico; S. America, Mediterranean. Alien (South Africa). Uses: Historically, physicians used leaf juice to soothe inflammation of the mucous membranes of the respiratory or urinary system; to treat painful or difficult urination and involuntary urination. In Europe the fresh juice has been used to treat water retention and painful urination and to soothe lung inflammation. Related species: M. edule L. (Carpobrotus edulis [L.] N. E. Br.), or Hottentot Fig, a common escape in California, is used externally in S. Africa for burns and thrush and internally for dysentery. Warning: High in oxalates, potentially toxic in high doses, especially in flower and fruit.

CANADA VIOLET Whole plant Viola canadensis L. Violet Family Perennial with short, thick rhizome and slender stolons; to 10 in. Leaves heart-shaped or oval on long stalks; tips pointed; margins toothed. Flowers solitary from leaf axils. Petals white above, purple beneath, yellow-centered; bottom petal dark-lined, spurred; side petals hairy at base; Apr.–July. Pod splitting into 3 valves. Where found: Moist to dry woods. Ore. to ne. Wash., Idaho, Utah, Ariz. Rockies from Mont. to N.M.; eastern N. America. Uses: Native Americans used a root tea for pains in the bladder region. Externally, a poultice was used to treat skin abrasions and boils. In European traditions violet species were listed as soothing and softening for coughs and colds, urinary tract ailments, and skin conditions. Warning: Roots of most if not all violet species may induce vomiting.

It's ok......

I was really hoping for something more thorough with better pictures and descriptions. This book is far from a stand alone book, you will need to refer to other field guilds to identify and other medicinal herb books for medicinal plant properties. Also do not like the way they openly say abortions, better to say this plant causes miscarriages instead of this plant is used for abortion. There are some plants that should have had cautions to them that didn't.

A field guide of medicinal Plants

I love the book, as well as descriptions and its completeness, I only wish the pictures were a little larger, but as it is a field guide there just isn't room I guess. Regardless, I highly recommend it for its completeness and competent style and content. The four stars is only for the Smallish photos, everything else is a 5. My real rating would be 41/2 , 5 if pictures were larger. These older eyes don't see as clearly as they once did!

I purchased this book as I've recently relocated to a wilderness area and wanted an assist in identifying the plants in my new area. This book is well written and cross referenced and has proven invaluable in helping me to locate, identify and utilize the plants and herbs in my new area. This book should be a staple in every healer's library.

Any information about tires is a treasure!

The tire is the most important part of an automobile, and the least covered by the literature. That's why any information about tires is a treasure. The complexity of the structure and behavior of the tire are such that no complete and satisfactory theory has been propounded. Books on vehicle dynamics are available but they are mostly written by academics who emphasize mathematical rather than clear explanation of how things really work. The tire might be the most useful and complicated device humans make, but the tire manufacturers provide no useful information to their customers. People are forced to buy tires mainly on the basis of price and company reputation. Even race teams get tire data only sporadically, and that data is pretty useless anyway. Tire performance is necessarily highly dynamic, but tire data comes mainly from testing under static conditions.

This book describes basic properties of components of the rubber compound, carbon black reinforcement, and so on. It also shows mechanical model for rubber: "If you apply a cyclic force the rubber will deform mostly like a spring and give back the force applied to it, but also partly like a damper which is sensitive to the speed (frequency ) of the applied force". The book breaks rubber friction into adhesion (molecular bonding) and mechanical keying (deformation friction). Mechanical keying becomes more important when the road surface is lubricated by dust, water or ice; here is where another interesting property of rubber, viscoelasticiity comes into play. "Press your thumbnail into a street tire and the rubber rebounds. Press it into a racing tire and the mark stays there, recovering only slowly. This is a simple but crude test of hysteresis, or energy loss, in rubber". The book analyzes surface texture effects on rubber friction - how the slope of the asperities affect friction, and "the myth of off-line in the rain". Tire behavior is another major issue of the book.

The last 75 pages of the book (chapter 11) are not directly about tires, and devoted to "Basic Vehicle Dynamics", in case if you don't have an appropriate book on that topic, e.g. "Race Car Vehicle Dynamics" by Milliken Bill and Doug.

I also recommend "Mechanics of Pneumatic Tires". It is a PDF that you can freely download from the publisher's website using an internet search engine. This PDF is an excerpt from "Theory of Ground Vehicles, 3rd Edition" by J. Y. Wong.

A technical book that you can't put down?

Beleive it or not, this technical book had me glued to its pages like a great work of fiction. Haney is an excellent writer, and the 'meat' of the text is intertwined with great real-world stories and examples from motorsport. Interviews with Mario Andretti, Dan Gurney, as well as other less famous but no less competent vehicle dynamic experts are included.
The first part of the book is everything you could have ever imagined you'd like to know about tires. There are explanations and insights into tire manufacturing and testing that I don't think you could find anywhere else. If you are into any form of motorsport you realize how important tires are; this book will help you understand how tires function and, even more importantly, how to use this information to go faster!
The second section of the book is basic vehicle dynamics. If you're well read, most of that will be review. But for beginners, I think the way Haney starts with tire dynamics and works ino the vehicle is very natural and a good way to learn for the first time.
This book is technical but easy to read, contains information and discussion that will be enjoyable for veterans yet not overwhelm newcomers to vehicle dynamics. Even if you have a large library I promise you this book will remain one of your all-time favorites.
