About the Author

THOMAS F. GOLDMAN, JD, is Professor Emeritus of Bucks County Community College, where he was a Professor of Law and Management and Director of the Center for Legal Studies and the Paralegal Studies Program. A former member of the Paralegal Studies Advisory Board and mentor at Thomas Edison State College, where he developed the Advanced Litigation Support and Technology Certificate Program in the School of Professional Studies. A founding advisory board member of the American University of Phnom Phen, he created the legal studies curriculm. He is an author of textbooks in paralegal studies and technology, including The Paralegal Professional, Fourth Edition; Accounting and Taxation for Paralegals; Civil Litigation: Process and Procedures, Third Edition; SmartDraw: A Hands-On Tutorial and Guide; Litigation Practice: E-Discovery and Technology; and AbacusLaw: A Hands-On Tutorial and Guide.

An accounting and economics graduate of Boston University and of Temple University School of Law, Professor Goldman has an active international law, technology law, and litigation practice. He has worked extensively with paralegals and received the award of the Legal Support Staff Guild. He was elected the Legal Secretaries Association Boss of the Year for his contribution to cooperative education by encouraging the use of paralegals and legal assistants in law offices. He also received the Bucks County Community College Alumni Association Professional Achievement Award. Great book! It's easy to read and has a great deal of information.

It's a course-required book, so I had to get it. Since its more of a introductory type of class I decided to rent it instead. It's pretty easy to read and has a great deal of up to date information in the legal industry. Technology has definitely evolved for the legal industry and it's only going to get better and more advance.

Highest of the High Deepest of the Deep

Having learned through all of mishna, tanach, and completing talmud bavli, i saved midrash rabbah for my next adventure. I'm 19 chapters in and i've found a "new love." I'm glad i saved it for now, after having a total familiarity with Torah learning. This Soncino translation is superb, a joy to read. The work itself, a thought provoking spiritual trip to the outer limits and beyond.

A delightful collection of immaginary Bible interpretations

Midrash Rabbah is one of many Midrashim, usually imaginative explanations of biblical books written frequently as parables to teach moral and religious lessons. It borrows freely from earlier works, such as the Yerushalmi [Jerusalem Talmud], Bereshith Rabbah, and Vayikra Rabbah as well as the Babylonian Talmud. We don’t know exactly when it was composed, but it may have been written in the tenth century. The following is a selection of some of its comments on chapter one of the biblical book Esther:
Rabbi Akiba was teaching his students when he saw they were falling asleep. He woke them by asking “How did Esther merit to reign over 127 provinces?” He answered his own question. “Let Esther the descendant of Sarah who lived 127 years come and reign over 127 provinces.”
Why did Vashti refuse to come to be viewed by her husband Ahasuerus’s guests? One answer in this Midrash is that she advised her husband: if the men see how beautiful I am they will try to kill you and take me for themselves. Ahasuerus ignored her advice and focused on her refusal to comply with his order. Who were the wise men from whom Ahasuerus asked for advice? They were Jews.
How come Ahasuerus's advisor Memucan gave his opinion first even though he was the most insignificant of his adisors? “From this we learn that an ignoramus always thrusts himself to the front.
How was Vashti punished? Ahasuerus “gave the order and they brought in her head on a platter.”

Great Rabbinic insight Scriptures

I am a Christian who realizes the great value in studying Torah and rabbinic liturature for it's deep ethical moral applications for life. This collection also gives great insight into how many of the sages interpreted Scripture during the apostolic/early church era and what many of the rabbinic debates were at that time. It helps glean insight into many concepts found in the New Testament. A great collection for any serious student of the bible.

After an Indian attack, the three are left with no adult support, scant supplies, no transportation, and a cow in tow to journey along the dangerous Shawnee side of the Ohio to the safety of the Marietta settlement. Readers will recognize the breathless pace they've loved in action movies, defined by the eruption of a new crisis on the heels of each crisis resolution, as the siblings struggle against the odds: scavenging food; stealing fire from the Indians; whittling tools for catching supper; rescuing a young Shawnee from drowning; and treating wounds with chickweed and birch leaves. The author's sturdy plot advances distinctly and chronologically, resulting in pure suspense. She keeps her vocabulary action-oriented and her dialogue straightforward. The young Shawnee's presence raises intriguing philosophical questions regarding the nature of communication and the components of true friendship. On the way, they save an injured Shawnee boy and are captured by warriors from his tribe. Eventually, they learn that they have less to fear from Red Moccasin and his kin than they believed, and Amos finds the courage to "plant a seed of friendship." A bracing work of historical fiction makes an unfriendly place of the Ohio riverfront as three children fight for their lives. In May 1793 the motherless Dunn family--Papa, Amos, Clara, and Jonathan--have almost completed their long trek from eastern Pennsylvania to the place where they hope to make a new life, the Ohio frontier. Amos, 13, is particularly anxious to start over; his memory of a terrible event and his subsequent guilt can be assuaged only in a new place. When the riverboat that is to carry the family to Marietta is ambushed by Indians, a terrible battle ensues, and in the confusion, the boat goes adrift, carrying the Dunn children down river. A second Indian attack causes them to abandon the boat and they land on the north shore of the Ohio River. Their only course is to walk to Marietta, following the river. Along the way, Amos spots a boy clinging to a floating log, and rescues him. He is an Indian boy, barely alive from a gunshot wound, and the children start to nurse him back to health. Still ahead for them: They are taken prisoner by a band of Shawnee, and need to reach Marietta, hoping to see their father again. Willis (Out of the Storm, 1995, etc.) has created a rousing adventure; it will have readers turning the pages and rooting for the spunky Dunn kids all the way. The purchase was a complete waste of money. The book is missing the entire center. The first few chapters are repeated in the middle of the book. The teacher friend I bought if for, threw it away.

A very worthwhile read about some pretty sturdy young pioneers

My 8 year old son and I really enjoyed "Danger Along the Ohio." The strong-willed and self-reliant characters are very appealing. The language is well-crafted - descriptive, but not too difficult. This setting is late-18th century.

During the 20 years leading up to the Treaty of Greenville in 1795, Indians commonly attacked settlers coming down the Ohio in a futile attempt to prevent the settlement of their traditional hunting lands to the south and their homelands to the north. It was the era of Daniel Boone, Simon Kenton, Tecumseh and a host of other storied frontiersmen and women, and Patricia Willis' characters fit right in.

The story revolves around Amos' attempts to befriend the Indian boy he rescues from drowning. Young readers will certainly identify with his awkward and frustrating attempts to win the friendship of his enemy. It is persistence that pays off in the end.

My only criticism is that Ms. Willis reflexively adopts the modern narrative of the sympathetic native and comes off a bit antagonistic toward the settlers. The Indians are vulnerable and human, while the scouts who rescue the children are gruff, forceful, and violent. To be sure, this kind of novel is not the place to depict the realities of savagery committed on both sides of the state of war that existed between these peoples. But Amos would have never been treated with such forbearance. Had Ms Willis managed to successfully bring a more realistic tension to bear on their relationship, with the same result, I would have given it 5 stars.

Still, a very good book about an American era that kids just don't know enough about.

About the Author

Robert R. Perkinson is the clinical director of Keystone Treatment Center in Canton, South Dakota. He is a licensed psychologist; licensed marriage & family therapist; internationally certified alcohol and drug counselor; South Dakota certified chemical dependency counselor, Level III; and a nationally certified gambling counselor and supervisor. His specialty areas focus on treating alcoholics, addicts, and pathological gamblers. He is the author of Chemical Dependency Counseling: A Practical Guide (2nd ed.) (2003a), which is the leading treatment manual in the world for chemical dependency counselors. With Dr. Arthur E. Jongsma Jr. (2001) he is the coauthor of The Addiction Treatment Planner, which is the best-selling treatment planner and computer software program for mental health and addiction professionals. He has also written The Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Patient Workbook (2003c) and the Gambling Addiction Patient Workbook (2003b). These workbooks have all of the exercises patients need to enter a stable recovery. His book entitled Treating Alcoholism: How to Help Your Clients Enter Recovery (2004) trains professionals how to treat patients with alcohol problems. This book makes you feel good about yourself.

At the last American Society of Addiction Medicine meeting in New York, I found out that most treatment centers were using this book. I read the text and I can see why. The book tells you how to do everything you need to know to treat addiction well. Besides, it makes you feel good about yourself and what you do as a counselor. The book is incredibly loving and healing for anyone to read, even the patient. It contains all of the tests and exercises needed to take a patient through treatment. It leaves no stone unturned.

Nice but old

Perkinson is competent and caring, structured and paced. But it's a bit old, as if all CD treatment was unadulterated Minnesota Model, 28 day inpatient care. Now , in fact, more than 1/2 of those facilities have died on the vine due to managed care, and outpatient rules. Plus we've got patient placement criteria, all kinds of research from Project MATCH and etc., and new techniques like motivational enhancement, stages of change. Maybe if Perkinson put out a second edition and updated it, we'd find it more useful

This book is a must for every clinician working in the field. I use the material working with both adult and adolescent clients. The concepts are written in a manner which make it appropriate for any group/individual regardless of age, sex, education level, or ethnic background. Takashi Amano has been a leader in aquarium design for more than two decades. He established the Aqua Design Amano Company in 1982 to promote natural aquarium design and developed a line of products to make creating and maintaining a nature aquarium easier. Though he lives and works in Niigata, Japan, Amano travels extensively to study natural aquatic habitats.

There are multiple reasons I give this book two stars, but the summary my long-winded reasons below is that there is a very high bar for Takashi Amano books, and compared to his other works, this title does not reach that bar.
I will not compare this book to his fourth published English language book - Aquarium Plant Paradise - because of how different and conventionalized that title is, but rather to his first three English language Nature Aquarium World books.

This book is very slightly smaller in format that his first three books (Nature Aquarium World: 1994, and Nature Aquarium World 2 & 3: 1997, the latter two were originally published as a single volume in Japan). It leans towards a horizontal book format (his first book was upright and the other two were square), and although it can be opened flat to look at photos spanning both pages, the pages quickly separate from their glue binding! The stitched binding holds, but as this book has been published for only a short time, I cannot assume those thin double threads will hold in heavily used copies. This is the first of his books released by TFH that was not manufactured in the US, and it shows. While TFH books generally have weak-feeling spines, they hold up and bindings used to be guaranteed for 10 years; now the company provides a trendier logo and omits any quality guarantee. This book is manufactured in China. The paper is thin compared to the nice stock used previously and the ink printing is very cheap (low resolution) compared to the books printed in the '90s. In cases where aquarium photos are present in both books, you can see the difference in quality when laying the books side by side. Most unfortunately, the patented Foto-Glaze in all of TFH's previous Amano books has been omitted. This means that not only do the compositions show less depth (good laminate enhances color markedly), but the cheap ink smudges with fingerprints easily. Many pages are black, and this also readily shows finger smudges. Lack of Foto-Glaze also makes it harder to position the pictures in strong lighting without catching glare.

The colors in all photos of this book have been retouched by Amano, and many appear oversaturated. While the compositions are still beautiful, the combination of cheap ink, no Foto-Glaze for depth enhancement, and colors that are either too light, dark, or neon, leads to a lessened visual experience. Also regrettable is that most of the photos in this book are portrayed smaller than in previous volumes. Whereas previous volumes showcased one tank per two facing pages, this book shows two or three tanks per two facing pages, and often with more margin space, hence smaller tank images. Small image size is the cost of the deco design of the book. For those who like cube tanks, you will be disappointed by the fact that some of your favorite tanks are portrayed in space smaller than 4x4". Details cannot be seen in these images.

There's the dirt, now for the sparkle. The cover is attractive and seems durable (besides the faulty glue binding), although there is no publisher shrinkwrap (probably good for the environment) to protect the dust jacket during shipping. The pictorial cover boards (same images as dj) are the slightly reflective paper used on many Chinese natural history books, which I think looks very nice. The typesetting is appealing though maybe too small for some, and while there are plenty of editorial errors in the typical Amano data columns (spelling and omission/misidentification follies), the info is all there. While still no indication is given of how long a tank was set up prior to being photographed, and ratios of soil types are not provided, measurements are now given in inches and Fahrenheit instead of cm and C (aquarium volume is not provided at all). Page numbering is discrete, although it blatantly interrupts several photographs throughout the book (those photos centered to the bottom right corner).

Tanks are pictured in the order in which they were photographed. This is very interesting because you can see changes in trends in Amano's style through the years. A strong correlation with the openeing of his gallery, in which tanks viewed from all sides are showcased, and more frequent use of light, open backgrounds rather than black ones overgrown with stem plants, is quickly seen. Certain plants become more or less common in his compositions. Overall, his aquaria appear much less dynamic through time than those among competitors in his annual Nature Aquarium contest (pictured in TFH magazine), though this is not surprising since his tanks are the work of a single person's creativity. Still, it does feel as you go through the book that you come to look at more and more of the same thing, particularly the Wabisabi rock/plains aquaria. The fish species he uses are definitely on the redundant side.

This book provides minimal information (approximately 6-8 pages) on how to set up certain aspects of a Nature Aquarium, plus tidbits distributed throughout his narratives, and will leave those without a pre-established sense of natural arrangements and/or a green thumb (aquamarine thumb?) clambering to learn "HOW!?" The book is useful only to enhance your own creativity - if you do not already have a large dose of natural knowhow, you will get virtually no applied help from this book. This is as it was in Amano's previous books, and since he gives the disclaimer that his are picture books, you can't fault any of the volumes for their lack of applied instruction. To buy an Amano book expecting step-by-step lessons is like buying a pictorial book on Zen gardens expecting to walk away knowing how to build your own. You can look at the finished product, and learn certain fundamental intricacies behind some of its aspects, but won't likely get much more. The only Amano book to provide basic instruction for construction is Aquarium Plant Paradise, and this one does so in a very incomplete, anglicized fashion.

I think a pricetag half that of the publisher's would be a fair deal for this book, but its list price is too high for what the buyer gets, particularly considering the more eloquently done volumes produced in the US all retailed for less than this one (35.95, 39.95, 29.95 respectively, though I guess it does cost money to float books over from Chinese factories...). Based on the quality of production and presentation, I rank this as the least important of his Nature Aquarium World books to view, but reverse this advice in terms of comprehensiveness. Previous quality considered or not, there are so many beautiful aquaria in this book that are not to be missed by plant tank fans. Know the flaws going in, and you almost certainly won't regret purchase. Weird thing to close with about a two star book, I know.

It was really surprising for me that Amano still uses film camera and not digital camera.
The only let down with this book is quality of paper and binding of the book.
My copy was not received in good condition, binding was damaged.
Overall a nice book and I got lots of idea for my planted tank.

Gives you a goal to work towards

This is an amazing book filled with a very large number of pictures of tanks and specifications of size/equipment/list of Flora and Fauna. It is great as a source of inspiration and as a goal to strive towards as you keep your own aquarium. The tanks covered range in size from small 20 inches to very large 100 inches and more, so there is something for you no matter what your tank size.

Also the time period covered is large enough, that you can see subtle changes in style as Mr Amano himself progresses in his hobby.

The book makes a great coffee table book, and a good conversation starter.

His other picture books are pretty expensive, so the price was a very pleasant surprise.
