Thoroughly enjoying working through this book. Lots of info and techniques. Will be using this as a reference for many years. The CD that is enclosed helps to explain some of the less easily understood techniques by giving great examples of what the sounds are that you are trying for.

Outstanding Fingerstyle Ukulele Instruction

Fred Sokolow is a great musician and instructor. This book will take the ukulele strummer into the world of ukulele fingerpicking in a very satisfying way. The material is well graded from beginner to intermediate and advanced. The various styles are clearly presented and illustrated, and the tunes used are quite well known. For those who want to take their ukulele playing to a new level, this book will serve as a very useful tool.

variety of techniques

Melodies are pretty basic, tabs underneath. Progressively harder ie chords for song, basic melody for song, basic melody w chords, rolls interspersed in song. Various options for playing the chords through out a song depending on time signature. ( Not different chord shapes but variations on which strings of that chord you play separately or together, in a pattern, within a bar or two. ) There's a lot in here to try. Not advanced rocket science stuff. I am intermediate self taught. I can play everything in here. It's the introduction of different ways to play the chords/rolls/styles that I liked. I can apply that to other songs I play.

Go for the Time Out series.

Compared to the Time Out series, the organization of this book makes it much harder to use. Time Out is more focused on the type of thing you're looking for. This book organizes by neighborhood. It seems to go on the premise that should you want a certain kind of food, you won't go from say, Admiralty to Central, for it. Lots of page turning, back and forth.
Design wise there's a lot of visual clutter. It also fall short of providing detail in the maps area. The poor design it harder to read...and downright annoying at times.
Where it is good is on restaurants, perhaps; and general necessary information on the basics of Hong Kong. also, can be good on the outer areas.
The maps in the back don't compare to Time Out series. It does come with a small map you can tear out, but even that is hard to use.
My feeling is that for some travelers this may have enough information or hit on the areas they may be most interested in, but as a total package...
if you're only buying one guidebook, go with Time Out.

Hong Kong Travel Guide Worth Reading
The Lonely Planet Hong Kong (Travel Guide) is a great source to have for travel.
The beginning of the book has great pages and the entire book is filled with quick facts.
Currency exchange is explained and hotels and restaurants are recommended.
The book also includes facts about Macau.
There are helpful phrases in Cantonese, but since Hong Kong is a former British colony, many Hong Kongers speak
English.
Buy and read this travel guide. You won't be disappointed.

Your Best Guide to Hong Kong

I love all the Lonely Planet guides. I used this one on my recent trip. It has so much information that was very useful. For example, it said that museums were free on Wed, so we saved some money and went on Wed. Also, it provided a bunch of veggie restaurants that weren't necessarily on the beaten path - and we tried almost all of them! The highlight was the Veggie Dim Sum at the Lock Cha Tea House which I would not have found without the guide.

The guide also comes with a pull out map, subway guides, and sensible information about the different areas.

Muhammad was a chief of state who publicly acknowledged the importance of affection and sexuality. He was a polygynous husband whose wives were not just background figures but often shared decision-making with him. According to Moroccan sociologist Mernissi ( Beyond the Veil ), the founder of Islam asserted the equality of women, rejected slavery and envisioned an egalitarian society. Mernissi further claims that successive Muslim priests manipulated and distorted sacred texts, from the seventh century onward, in an effort to maintain male privileges. Her close textual analyses of the Hadith , or stories of words and deeds attributed to the Prophet, support her far-reaching reinterpretation of the historic roots of Islam and its modern tendency to reduce woman to a "submissive, marginal creature."

Mernissi, an internationally known Moroccan sociologist, endeavors to show that discrimination against women, so common in the Muslim world today, is not a fundamental tenet of Islam as many contemporary male Muslims would like us to believe. Her basic premise is that Islam is inherently egalitarian and, using extensive documentation from the Koran, the Hadith, and other Islamic historical commentary, Mernissi successfully proves her hypothesis. While doing so, she teaches the reader a great deal about Mohammed (the man as well as the prophet), his wives, his companions, and early Islamic society. Like Mernissi's other books ( Beyond the Veil , Indiana Univ. Pr., 1987; Doing Daily Battle , Rutgers Univ. Pr., 1989; Women in Emergent Morocco , Flame Internat., 1982), this fascinating, well-written, and well-documented work is an excellent addition to scholarship on Muslim women. Recommended for academic libraries and others with women's studies or Middle East collections.

I found the first half of this book to be very well researched, with her logic based on solid foundations. I very much liked her conclusions about Muslim women in politics, and felt that she backed her case up well with her research. However, this 'fell apart' in the second half of the book where she relied on many common traditions without subjecting them to the same vigorous research process she did those in the earlier part of the book. I respect her conclusion that Islamic law regarding women was unable to reach the ideal the Prophet (sas) would have liked to see in his community, due to the patriarchal society which existed at the time, and that as Muslims we should be striving to achieve that ideal as we have progressed from the ignorance and patriarchy of those times. Unfortunately I found her evidence to be somewhat lacking in authoritativeness, and I hope to find another work which expands upon that point with a proper academic foundation.

Excellent and learned, but really for muslims

Fatima Mernissi's book is a fascinating excursion through her own journey of discovery. She takes us from a man's put-down of her with the Hadith "those who entrust their affairs to a woman will never know prosperity", to an enlightened understanding of the historical context in which the oppressive traditions of Islam arose.
After explaining her background in the introduction she deals with the above hadith and how it came about, she analyzes the role of women in early Islam and especially the prophet's apparent view of women and a very in-depth and detailed discussion of how the veil, or hijab, came into being for Muslim women.
She shows that the denial of women's rights was not the intention of Allah, as the source of Holy Law, nor of Mohammed, but arose in the context of the pre-existing social values of the Arab world of the time, and of the vested political interests and power struggles of the period following Mohammed's death.
The study is very detailed and quite arcane, and although Ms Mernissi takes a lot of care to explain terminology and context, it really requires some background knowledge of Islam and Arabs. The book's main target audience is Moslem women, to show they do have rights within Islam, and possibly Moslem men. I believe westerners can learn from it, but are probably better served by reading more general books on Islamic history and culture. In particular non-Moslems need to understand that Islam is not a single culture, but in reality many traditions under one umbrella, in much the same way that Christendom encompasses many religious and cultural traditions.

The best book on Islam I've ever read.

I have to reiterate: the reveiwers which condemn this book because they don't agree with it are crazy. If you buy one book on Islam, let this be it.

That said, Fatima Mernissa, a Muslim herself, has certainly left no stone unturned with her analyses of the Hadith's. This woman has done her reasearch. From explaining why it's not "un-Islamic" to check on the veritablness of a Hadith, to picking apart two Hadith's with a fine toothed comb, to explaining just why wearing a veil is not only unrequired by the Koran, but is unIslamic in itself, she covers just about everything in this book.

Having grown up in a Muslim family myself, I've obviously been subjected to the mindframe of your typical Muslim male - that women are inferior for, well, being women. It's the sole reason I renounced the religion at a young age. The rest of the females in my family remain Muslim, and with this book, I can finally explain to them just why it is that, as I had always suspected, the "words of God" have been twisted by men for their own agenda - mainly to remain the dominant gender in the Middle East.

Nobunaga is very probably the least well known of the three giant figures (with Hideyoshi and Tokugawa) of later-16th-century Japan who set in motion the events that produced a unified country under the Tokugawa family's leadership after 1600. Helpful scholarly aids and refinements fill the volume. The translation is clear, the footnotes are substantive, and the supporting text analyses are often fascinating. Jurgis Saulius Algirdas Elisonas, Ph.D. (1969) in History and Far Eastern Languages, Harvard University, is Professor Emeritus of East Asian Languages and Cultures and of History at Indiana University. He has published extensively on Japanese political, cultural, and international history of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.Jeroen Pieter Lamers, Ph.D. (1998) in Literature, Leiden University, is Chief of Staff at the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture, and Innovation. His publications include Japonius Tyrannus: The Japanese Warlord Oda Nobunaga Reconsidered (Hotei, 2000) and other works on early modern Japanese history and culture.

A needed addition to medieval Japanese history

This work marks a significant contribution the field of Japanese history. Hitherto there have been good translations of war tales and memoirs covering most of the samurai era. These ranged from from The Tale of Heike in the early medieval to Remembering Aizu in the early modern. Sadly the Warring States period (sixteenth century Japan) represented one major gap. There are of course numerous histories from this era (produced primarily in the early Edo period). However, these works have remained inaccessible to English speaking audiences. While The Chronicle of Lord Nobunaga is not the literary tour de force of Heike monogatari, this translation is fluid, accessible, and authentic in its overall tone. The subject of the work, Oda Nobunaga, is also of course one of the most important figures of the sixteenth century. This book represents the most detailed treatment of Nobunaga in English. This is probably one of the most important translations of the past ten years for premodern field.

The overall story, insight, and excitement make up for the boring parts. Sections can be extremely sad/morose. Violent.

Ōta Gyūichi's Shinchō kōki, translated by JSA Elisonas and JP Lamers as The Chronicle of Lord Nobunaga, offers a deep and unique insight into life in 16th century Japan, particularly life as a member of the nobility. At times the writing itself is poetic, fast-paced, and full of imagery while at others it's monotonous, gruelingly detailed, and morbid. Throughout the work, it's obvious that Gyūichi poured his heart and soul into writing a factual chronicle as best he could, not an embellished fairytale. While there is an apparent bias in his writing - he praises his former feudal Lord at every opportunity - he doesn't fail to recount instances of extreme brutality and questionable actions taken by Nobunaga. Still, he almost entirely refrains from adding his own analyses, assumptions, and opinions. What remains are mostly facts.

The translation is beautiful. The footnotes are astoundingly detailed and well-researched. Elisonas and Lamers have included an informative preface, timeline of events, and introduction as well as fifteen maps and an index. It's hard to think of anything else they could have done to make this a more complete experience.

The content of this chronicle is not for the faint-hearted. The savagery and relentless disregard for human life documented herein is overwhelming. While there are meticulously detailed accounts of sumo matches, parades, falconry, festive gatherings, gift-giving, construction projects, and tea ceremonies along with anecdotes of generosity, kindness, and hospitality, the majority of this work deals with Nobunaga's scorched-earth military conquests and the unspeakable atrocities that surrounded his life.

That being said, there's nothing else out there in the non-fiction realm that's quite like The Chronicle of Lord Nobunaga and I highly recommend it to anyone who's willing to trudge through a thick history book in order to transport themselves several hundred years back in time to feudal Japan.

A Classic People Will Be Reading 200 Years Hence

While not viewed as fully conventional or relevant for modern US medicine, the is a classic. Elegant in it's simplicity that contends that improving O2 delivery to every cell in the body is good and necessary thing especially as we age. All backed up by real science nearly always absent (or obscured) in our US drug based treatments. Who would have thunk!

The ultimate primer for EWOT/Oxygen Multistep Therapy. While von Ardenne was most focused on curing cancer, the general parameters he set out transform very well into modern EWOT protocols with high volume delivery of O2. As a scientific paper, and one that is a little older, it is heavy reading! However, with even a little scientific background, it is possible to extrapolate the information required to make an informed decision about EWOT as a therapy, or exercise protocol. More a reference book than a weekend read!

I need better guidance and will be discussing it with my pulmonologist ...

I am not technically minded, but I have a lung condition so I wanted to read this book. It has been so inspirational for me that I began to attempt to practice this, exercising with oxygen. I need better guidance and will be discussing it with my pulmonologist on my next visit. Apparently, you can get this therapy in Germany where insurance will pay for it, at least that is what the book said. I wish U.S. doctors were more informed on other therapies besides just pharmaceuticals.
