Starred Review. Grade 5–7—What was supposed to have been a reunion with Mr. Benedict turns into trouble for the four young heroes of The Mysterious Benedict Society (Little, Brown, 2007). Mr. Benedict and his assistant Number 2 have been kidnapped by the evil Mr. Curtain while abroad, so Reynie, Kate, Sticky, and Constance set off to rescue him, aided by a set of clues Mr. Benedict left before his abduction. Adventure and danger await the four onboard an unusual ship, at a castle in Portugal, in the Netherlands, and finally on a mysterious island, where they fall into the hands of Mr. Curtain and his henchmen. It is a combination of courage and their amazing talents that allows the youngsters to squeak out of every predicament. The action takes a while to get going in earnest as more attention is given to the worries and thoughts of the children and to their interactions with the various helpful, eccentric, or nasty adults they meet in their travels. They also learn to understand themselves and one another a little better by the end of their harrowing journey. As a result, this is not just a rip-roaring adventure with plenty of clever twists and hair's-breadth escapes, but also a warm and satisfying tale about friendship.—Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library

From Booklist
The daring foursome from the well-received The Mysterious Benedict Society (2007) returns in a second perilous adventure. As the book opens, the children reunite at Mr. Benedict’s home, where he has arranged a treasure hunt. Alas, they discover that Benedict and his assistant are being held captive somewhere, and dire consequences will result if Benedict’s evil twin doesn’t receive the information he desires in four days. The children undertake a worldwide journey to save Benedict and find the duskwort that will cure his narcolepsy. Lots of backstory is needed to set up this sequel, which makes for a choppy beginning. In the previous book, the protagonist’s personal stories provided heft, but this is pure adventure—lots of racing, scheming, fighting. Punches are pulled on the violence front, but the threat is always there, creating page-turning tension. It’s this roller coaster, along with the essential goodness of the characters (except, perhaps, for Constance), that will draw kids to this breathless follow-up. Grades 4-7. --Ilene Cooper

So many adult reviewers have missed the point: this fantasy speaks vividly to the the 'tween
By J. McD
My son was assigned this book as summer reading rising to 6th grade. I try to either read books aloud with my kids, or read them simultaneously so we can talk together about what we've read. I should also reveal that I am a 4th grade teacher and embarrassed to say I had not yet read this, though it is in my classroom library and some of my more advanced readers have said that they love this book.
I completed this book in two summer afternoons while stuck at home sick. And I didn't want to put it down. The characters are rich and the action is a fun romp through dangerous waters. It's really important to remember for whom this book was written -- instead of the knee-jerk adult analyses (too long, disappointing ending, blah blah blah) this book speaks beautifully well to 'tweens and their hopes and fears about fitting in, being "normal", being nerdy, the possibility of being a hero, etc. Do you REMEMBER what this stage of life felt like sometimes??! The author has masterfully spoken to the 9 - 12 year old reader: You are smart, you have unique talents and gifts, you CAN change the world, AND family are the folks who love and stick with you (blood relations or not).
Is the book perfect? Nope. Is the book a great read? Yup. Is the book written for a 40+-year-old bibliophile teacher? Of course not, but I love the book and so does my son.
I hope the author knows what an impressive job he did writing to his intended audience.

Smart and Fun Book
By Heather E. Hejduk
Four gifted children, Reynie, Sticky, Kate, and Constance, are put together in a team they call The Mysterious Benedict Society after their leader, Mr. Benedict. The children must infiltrate a school run by the evil Mr. Curtain in order to stop Mr. Curtain from taking over the world and erasing minds.
The Mysterious Benedict Society is smart and fun, full of puzzles and brainteasers. The children are very relatable. The characters are well developed. It’s a long book, but it doesn’t seem so long while reading it because so much of it is very exciting and fast-paced. I read it aloud to my 8 and 10 year old boys and their only complaint was that the chapters were almost always cliffhangers and I would only read them one or two chapters per night. I highly recommend this book to adults and children alike!

Childrens books that are such page turners I read them myself.

I found the Mysterious Benedict Society book and bought it for my niece. Since I hadn't heard of it before I thought I should read it before giving it to her to make sure it was age appropriate. It was such a page turner I couldn't put it down. .. I actually read all three in the series myself!!
These little mystery solvers are clever and daring and have great adventures together. These books are so well written and it's very 'G rated' and appropriate for young readers.
My niece needed all the Mysterious Benedict Society books.
